Overview
Knowing which shipping line is operating a vessel is essential for filtering, benchmarking, and analytics. Container Intelligence now highlights the commercial operator, the shipping line responsible for the vessel's commercial deployment, distinct from technical ownership or alliance service participation.
What changed
Previously, vessel profiles displayed all carriers and services associated with a vessel, including alliance partners sharing a route. The commercial operator is now highlighted as the primary carrier, making it immediately clear who is running the vessel.
Where to find it
Log in to marinetraffic.com, scroll down on the left menu bar to Containers and click Intelligence for:
Vessel’s calls
Click or search any vessel on the container intelligence map. In the Operator, Carriers & Services section, the commercial operator appears first and is visually highlighted.
Terminal lineup
In any Terminal lineup view, use the new Operator filter to show only vessels operated by a specific shipping line. This is distinct from the existing "Carrier contains" filter, which returns all vessels associated with a service regardless of operator.
API
The commercial operator field is available in the vessel endpoint. A dedicated field returns the primary commercial operator separately from the full list of associated carriers. This is a non-breaking addition, no changes required to existing integrations. See the API documentation link.
Example
A vessel operating on a major Asia-Europe corridor may appear across the service pages of three or four alliance partners. Identifying the commercial operator required cross-referencing multiple sources. That information in Container Intelligence is surfaced directly on the vessel and terminal profile.
Dataset
Vessel-to-operator assignments are maintained by a dedicated team of industry analysts who track commercial deployment agreements, charter arrangements, and alliance structures across the global container fleet. The dataset is updated on an ongoing basis and covers the majority of mainline container vessels.
