The MarineTraffic team are dedicated to improving the experience of our users across the globe by continually enhancing our data and the way our platform looks and operates. Customer feedback is at the core of every improvement we make, driving every part of our development roadmap.

We’ve implemented a number of exciting changes through 2024, with more to come before the year is out! Here is a recap of what’s changed:

Density Maps

We launched a major enhancement to our density maps functionality, showing the data of historical routes and traffic patterns from 2018 to the latest completed year. This enhancement means users can now filter by vessel type and size, and track the paths of ships since 2018. This provides invaluable data on historical routes and traffic patterns, allowing for deeper analysis of seasonality, global trade market trends and demands.

Launch of our new Maritime News function

2024 saw the launch of our new Maritime News function, a brand new type of insight intelligence for MarineTraffic. Available via the left hand navigation panel, and integrated into the vessel details tab, our Maritime News provides breaking news stories of interest to the maritime community. Our expert analysts cover a wide range of topics including accidents, maritime security, risk and compliance, and more.

Any vessel referenced in a news article is interlinked to the MarineTraffic map, meaning users can get real-time insight and track past movements of these vessels. This interlinking of current events, news, and vessel movements provides a holistic picture of maritime activity that helps our customers make informed decisions to improve their business operations.

Five years history in area related events in ‘Explore’

We’ve standardised historical data offerings, particularly focused on the ‘Entered/Left Area’ event, the most frequently used event. This has included making the response time 75% faster, and enhancing the speed of delivering five-year history for port calls, improving customer experience and making it even quicker to find the data you need.

User Interface enhancements

We’ve made a number of improvements to the look and feel of MarineTraffic, including updating colour palettes, making the way our graphs are represented clearer, and improving accordions and navigation elements. All these improvements have added up to a better experience when navigating the platform, ensuring our customers can find the information they need as easily and quickly as possible.

Port details redesign

We’ve improved the design of our port details tab to ensure our users can find the information that they need as quickly and easily as possible. This has included: integrating the statistics, expected arrivals, in port, arrival and departures, and other essential tabs into the port details overview. We’ve also added port congestion, which is clearly laid out in easy-to-read charts.

Vessel details redesign and news integration

We’ve integrated our new maritime news intelligence into the vessel details tab under ‘in the news’, meaning our users can see any related coverage of a vessel at a glance. This helps ensure a full picture of a vessel when screening or tracking.

We’ve also integrated vessel characteristics, port calls, and ownership into the vessel details, making this tab a one-stop shop for all information.

Lastly, we’ve also made the AIS source details clearer in the vessel details tab, ensuring our users know exactly what type of AIS (satellite, roaming, coastal) and which specific station our tracking intelligence is coming from.

You talk, we listen

We’ve also implemented over 35 bug fixes directly related to feedback from specific users and counting, highlighting the importance of each individual customer to our development roadmap.
