What is the significance of the MarineTraffic Events?

The following table contains a list of events that get recorded in the MarineTraffic database. They are used:

  • to produce the corresponding Notifications

  • to trigger responses for Vessel Events

IN_RANGE

The vessel re-appeared within the range of the MarineTraffic Network after being out of range for more than two hours.

OUT_OF_RANGE

There is no recorded position for the vessel by the MarineTraffic Network for more than one hour.

STOPPED

The vessel, previously moving, moves at a speed less than 0.5 knots (the event is not triggered while the ship is in port or anchorage).

UNDERWAY

The vessel, previously stopped, moves at a speed over 3.5 knots (the event is not triggered while the ship is in port or anchorage)

COURSE_CHANGED

The vessel has changed course according to AIS transmissions.

DRIFTING

Based on vessel's speed and heading, MarineTraffic suggests that a vessel is Drifting or it is not under command.

AIS_OFF

The vessel’s AIS signal cannot be detected, although the vessel is sailing within an area covered by MarineTraffic. The AIS transponder may have been switched-off or the AIS transmission is weak.

NAME_CHANGED

The vessel has changed name according to AIS transmissions.

SHIP_HIGH_WIND

According to wind forecasts the vessel is sailing in a windy area (the wind speed is over 30 knots)

PROXIMITY_VESSEL_START

The distance between the vessel and another vessel is less than 2 times the length of the longer vessel.

The vessel has moved to an area with a new time-zone.

Marks the commencement of a bunkering operation, where a vessel begins receiving fuel from a bunkering barge.

Denotes the completion of a bunkering operation, indicating that the fuel transfer has ended.

FIRST_POSITION

Represents the first recorded AIS position of a vessel in the MarineTraffic system.

The vessel has been lost from tracking (no AIS signal for an extended period).

PROXIMITY_VESSEL_END

Indicates that two vessels, previously in close proximity (less than twice the length of the longer vessel), have moved apart beyond this range.

Triggered when a pilot vessel moves away from the vessel it was assisting, indicating the end of pilotage services.

Triggered when a pilot vessel approaches a vessel to provide pilotage services.

Indicates that a pilot vessel is in close proximity to another vessel, typically during pilotage operations.

Marks the beginning of tug assistance, where a tugboat starts manoeuvring operations with another vessel.

Denotes the end of tug assistance, indicating that the tugboat has completed its manoeuvring operations with the vessel.

SPEED_AVG_BELOW_MIN

The vessel’s average speed has dropped below the defined minimum threshold

The vessel is operating in an area where the temperature is below freezing point.

MarineTraffic has identified a risk of the vessel arriving later than its reported ETA based on its current position and speed.

MarineTraffic has withdrawn a previously raised arrival delay risk notification as the vessel is no longer expected to arrive late.

The vessel is performing manoeuvring operations based on sudden changes in course, speed or heading.

The vessel has stopped near a port’s outer perimeter (Waiting Outside Port Limits – OPL).

Vessel's distance from Port is less than a certain value. Repeat at specified distance intervals until arrival.

Denotes that a newly installed AIS receiving station has successfully come online and is transmitting data to the MarineTraffic network.

Represents the generation and dispatch of a monthly performance report to AIS station operators, summarizing their station’s activity and statistics over the past month.
