Summary
Voyage Planner now runs on a new Routing Graph, replacing our previous routing logic. The new engine provides a more efficient route, point-to-point planning across the navigable sea network, and the option to avoid ECA and HRA zones. It's also the foundation for more advanced route planning and optimisation, which will be coming soon.
What's new
1. Optimised, more efficient routes
Voyage Planner now generates a single, optimised route based on factors such as distance and navigational constraints.
2. Point-to-point routing
You can now plan a route between any two locations across the navigable sea network. Previously, routes were limited to point-to-port.
3. ECA/HRA avoidance
Choose to avoid specific regulated areas (Emission Control Areas, ECAs) or high-risk areas (HRAs) where relevant to your voyage.
How to use it
Plan a point-to-point route
1. Open Voyage Planner in the MarineTraffic web application
2. Set your start location using the point icon.
3. Set your end location using the point icon.
4. Select Show routes
Avoid ECA/HRA zones
1. Select the Route Options drop down
2. Toggle on or off for ECA zones or HRA Zones
3. Select Show routes. The route will avoid the selected zones where relevant.
Future enhancements
To build on the new foundation, a few options available in the previous version are not included in this release but will be coming shortly:
• Alternative routes. Voyage Planner now returns a single optimised route.
• Arctic / inland waters option.
These options will be built into a future release.
Because routes are now calculated by a different engine, you may see differences from routes generated by the previous planner.
Availability
Voyage Planner is available on the Enterprise plan. If you'd like to discuss upgrading your plan to Enterprise to take advantage of our Voyage planner tool please contact you Account Manager or [email protected]
FAQ
Why did routes change?
The new Routing Graph calculates routes differently from the previous logic, so you may see different results for the same journey.
Where did alternative routes go?
They aren't supported by the new engine yet. This release returns one optimised route. Future enhancements are planned for the Voyage Calculator.
Can I still use the Arctic or inland-waters option?
Not in this release, but coming soon.
Will more features be added?
This release is the foundation for more advanced route planning and optimisation. We'll share updates as they become available.
Who do I contact with feedback?
