To search for a vessel, you can use either the Search bar on the Live Map or the Vessel category in the data navigation bar on the left. These search tools will display a list of vessels in the MarineTraffic database that match your search terms, helping you find the vessel you're looking for.
Search bar
The fastest way to search for vessels (or ports, lights etc) or track down specific ones is by using the Search bar at the top of the Live Map view.
As you type your search term, such as the vessel's name, IMO, or MMSI, a drop-down list will show vessels matching your search. By clicking on the vessel's name, you’ll be taken to her details page, where you can view all related information.
Note I: You can click on the Show on Map icon to see the vessel's current position on Live Map.
Notice the Show more results option at the bottom of the drop-down list. Clicking on this option instead of on the name of a vessel will result in opening a Search Results page. All vessels that match your search criteria will be displayed there.
Choose the vessel that interests you from the list to get to the detail page.
Note II: This type of search is the only one where you may get search results regarding Ex-Names of vessels - click on the vessel's ex-name to get to the Vessel Details page of the vessel under their current names.
More options on the Search Bar is the Recent and Most Tracked Vessels.
Explore tool
You can also use our Explore tool on the left side to explore all the vessels in the world, active and scrapped, with their key details and apply filters based on various vessel particulars to limit results to the exact shipping market segment of interest.
To search for vessels click on the Explore tab on the Main Menu and then select the Vessels option. This will take you straight to the Vessel Database section. You can use the Sidebar to quickly change between a number of available options, such as Vessels, Ports and more.
If you are looking for a specific vessel, you can use the quick search bar by typing the name, the MMSI or the IMO number.
More Filters
If you are not aware of the vessel's name or MMSI, you may consider adding relevant filters that will help you in your search.
Just click on the Add Filter button and a drop-down menu will appear. The first options are the most popular ones. Each filter added will appear in a box next to the Add Filter button. You can remove the filter any time by clicking on the X button next to it.
Note IV: If you purchased our Plans, a number of really interesting filters will be unlocked in this section.
