ETA to my location

Before you start

Make sure your device's GPS is enabled and that location permissions are granted to the MarineTraffic app. Without this, the ETA cannot be calculated.

To check on iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → MarineTraffic → set to While Using the App

To check on Android: Settings → Apps → MarineTraffic → Permissions → Location → set to Allow while using the app

Where to find it

  1. From the map, tap on any vessel to open its details page

  2. Tap the Current position tab

  3. Scroll down to the Vessel position section

  4. You will find the ETA to my location displayed alongside the Distance from me value

How is the ETA calculated?

The ETA to your location is estimated using three factors:

Factor

Details

Vessel's current speed

The speed over ground as last reported via AIS

Vessel's current course

The direction the vessel is currently heading

Your GPS location

Your device's real-time position

The result is an estimated date and time of arrival of the vessel at your current position.

Important limitations

  • The ETA is indicative only — it assumes the vessel maintains its current speed and course without any changes

  • It does not account for route deviations, stops, speed changes, or port calls

  • Always cross-reference with the vessel's last AIS update timestamp to confirm the position data is recent
