MarineTraffic has upgraded the area events capability providing more accurate and detailed maritime activity
We are updating selected Areas of Interest in MarineTraffic as part of a broader geospatial data improvement initiative.
The goal is to make area boundaries more accurate, consistent and easier to maintain across MarineTraffic and Kpler products
This update improves the completeness, granularity and timeliness of area events—giving you a more dependable record of vessel activity across ports, operational zones and other maritime areas.
What are area events?
Area events record when a vessel:
Enters a defined maritime area
Leaves a defined maritime area
These events help you understand how vessels move through locations and zones relevant to your operations, including ports, anchorages, straits and other geographic areas.
Depending on your MarineTraffic access, area events may be visible in vessel event histories and used to support monitoring and notification workflows.
What has improved?
More complete event detection
The updated service analyses vessel movements against MarineTraffic’s geographic areas with greater granularity.
This improves the detection of brief or complex area crossings that the previous event-generation logic could occasionally miss. For example, when a vessel enters an area for only a short period before leaving again.
Approximately 45% more area events
Initial comparisons show that the new service generates approximately 45% more area events than the previous MarineTraffic logic.
This does not mean that vessels are making more journeys. It means MarineTraffic is now capturing a more complete record of entry and exit activity.
More timely information
Area events are generated in near real time, helping recent vessel activity appear more promptly in MarineTraffic.
Greater consistency across the platform
Area boundaries and the events generated from them now use a shared source-of-truth foundation.
This helps ensure that the geographic areas displayed in MarineTraffic and the events associated with those areas remain more closely aligned.
What does this mean for me?
You may notice:
More entry and exit events in vessel histories
Improved detection of short-duration area visits
More detailed records of vessel movements between areas
Events appearing sooner after the relevant vessel movement
You do not need to change your existing MarineTraffic setup. The improvement has been applied to the underlying event-generation process.
Will my historical events change?
No. Previously generated historical events have not been recalculated or replaced.
The improved event-generation logic applies to new events created following the release. This means the number or detail of events visible before and after the change may differ.
Do I need to update my notifications?
No action is required.
Existing configurations that rely on area entry or exit activity will continue to operate. However, because the new service detects a more complete set of events, you may receive more relevant event records or notifications than before.
