29 July 2026 - Four new Risk & Compliance capabilities to strengthen vessel screening in MarineTraffic

MarineTraffic users can now uncover concealed port activity, identify exposure to high-risk locations, access analyst-reviewed Strait of Hormuz crossing data and review vessel results with more context.

Effective vessel screening depends on more than checking whether a vessel appears on a sanctions list. Compliance teams also need to understand where a vessel has called, whether activity took place while AIS was unavailable, and which vessels within a large result set warrant closer attention.

The latest Risk & Compliance capabilities in MarineTraffic bring these signals into one workflow, helping users move from an initial alert to a more informed investigation.

Capability

What it helps users understand

High-risk Port Calls

Whether a vessel has called at a port in a sanctioned or designated high-risk country or territory.

Dark Port Calls

Whether a port call took place while the vessel was not transmitting AIS.

Strait of Hormuz Daily Monitor

Which vessels crossed the Strait in either direction, based on a daily analyst-reviewed dataset.

Vessel classification columns

The category, type and subtype of vessels shown in the Compliance workspace.

Identify calls at high-risk ports

High-risk Port Calls highlight vessel visits to ports in sanctioned or designated high-risk countries and territories. Th iscapability helps users identify geographic exposure that may require enhanced due diligence, even when the vessel itself is not directly sanctioned.

When a risk is detected, users can open the event details to review the date, duration, port and country associated with the call. This provides a clear starting point for assessing the nature of the visit, its relevance to an organisation’s risk policy and whether further investigation is required.

High-risk Port Calls answers the question: Where did the vessel call?

Uncover port activity that took place without AIS

A port call can be difficult to assess when the vessel stops transmitting AIS data before arriving or while it is in port. The new Dark Port Calls risk type is designed to reveal these otherwise hidden events by identifying calls that occurred while the vessel was not transmitting.

This additional signal helps users investigate unexplained gaps in a vessel’s movement history and determine whether activity may have been deliberately concealed. It is especially useful when screening for sanctions exposure, deceptive shipping practices or unusual operational behaviour.

Dark Port Calls answers the question: Was the vessel visible while the call took place?

Download analyst-reviewed Strait of Hormuz crossing data

The Strait of Hormuz Daily Monitor Widget is now available in the MarineTraffic Compliance workspace. It gives Risk & Compliance users direct access to a downloadable spreadsheet of vessels identified as crossing the Strait in both directions.

The dataset is updated daily and reviewed by Kpler analysts.

This review is important because raw AIS events may not provide a complete picture during periods of AIS interruption, GNSS interference or suspected spoofing. The monitor gives users a more dependable basis for daily tracking, internal reporting and further analysis.

Users can use the dataset to review individual crossings, compare inbound and outbound activity, maintain a daily record of movements and incorporate the data into their own monitoring workflows.

Review vessel results with more context

The Compliance workspace now includes vessel category, type and subtype columns. These fields make it easier to understand the composition of a result set and identify the vessels most relevant to a particular screening or monitoring task.

Instead of opening individual vessel records to establish whether a result relates to a tanker, bulk carrier, container ship or another class, users can see that information directly in the workspace.

This reduces unnecessary navigation and helps teams prioritise large vessel lists more efficiently.

A more complete view of vessel risk

Together, these capabilities add important context to vessel screening in MarineTraffic. High-risk Port Calls show where a vessel has operated. Dark Port Calls reveal activity that took place outside normal AIS visibility.

The Strait of Hormuz Daily Monitor provides trusted crossing data for a critical chokepoint, while the new vessel-classification fields help users focus on the assets that matter most.

The result is a more connected workflow for detecting risk, understanding the underlying activity and deciding where deeper investigation is needed.
